Harnas Farm in Namibia
The Harnas Farm is a formal refuge for wild animals founded by Marieta van der Merwe. The Harnas Farm is operated by Marieta and her family, particularly her son Schalk, his wife Jo, and family relation Frikkie van Solms. The Harnas Farm is located outside of Gobabis, approximately 300 km from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Currently, over 350 wild animals are being cared for at the Harnas Farm.
The Harnas Farm is home to animals that have been displaced, abandoned, orphaned, abused, sick, injured, illegally traded, or endangered, or just too old. Some of the species of animals at the farm are listed to the right.
The Harnas Farm is particularly concerned with Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs, both of which are endangered species in this world. Currently, thirty-eight cheetahs thrive on the Harnas Farm. The Harnas Farm participates in genetic research of the African Wild Dogs for bio-medical data, disease screening and other genetic tracking. The Harnas Farm has one of the few growing African Wild Dog populations in Africa.
The Harnas Farm also runs its "Lifeline" project for the release of rehabilitated animals. Here, the animals are released into protected habitat stocked with game for their first step to the return to the wild. The animals are tracked by GPS collars.
The Harnas Farm in Namibia needs approximately U.S. $250 per day just to feed the animals. The 60+ lions, leopards, and cheetahs alone eat the equivalent of two horses each day. Additional costs are incurred for veterinary expenses, farm operations, land, enclosures, stocking game and GPS radio collars for the rehabilitation and ultimate release of animals.
